At Malcolm's invitation, Lechies jerked her attention from Rake's retreating back to the wagon.

"Oh, no, please," she said, brow furrowed. She reflexively straightened her spine, willing the fatigue to lift from her muscles. Find joy in it, even, now that she had the freedom for so much activity. "There's no such failure on your part. None of this would even have been possible without your intervention."

The miracle of her rescue, and three newly-minted citizens, hopefully taking their first steps onto a brighter path. Both a kind of salvation, but from opposite extremes, and delivered with as much steadfastness as swinging a sword. Her gratitude and respect for Malcolm could not be overstated.

Rather than join him on the driver's bench though, Lechies went to retrieve her staff, stepping carefully around the fresh graves. She smiled gently.

"And you needn't trouble yourself with another blessing. Magic, while useful in an emergency, isn't a substitute for proper rest. I just need to catch my breath is all; a wagon ride will be perfect for it."

Rake and gang weren't long before they returned, this time burdened only by simple supplies rather than a sledful of bodies. They had brought their swords with them, as well; perhaps sensing the disapproval about to spring from Lechies' lips—or fearing Malcolm's wrath—Rake showed that the blades were already peace-bonded, firmly tied into their sheaths with lengths of sturdy cord.

"All we know is fightin', anyhow. Might try our luck as sellswords, if we can get to a place that don't know our faces." Rake shrugged. "We won't try to hurt you, at any rate. We ain't that fuckin' stupid."

Lechies didn't argue. If Malcolm offered his opinion, whatever it was, she stayed quiet.

They set off with sunset stabbing them in the eyes. Exhausted as she was, the steady rocking of the wagon only served to put Lechies to sleep. Jaiza kindly offered his cloak for a pillow, and she spent the journey dozing, hand curled loosely around her staff and the last of Ristgir's warmth on her face.

She woke to Eun shaking her shoulder. Stifling a yawn, and noting grumpily that the afternoon's work had suffused her body with new soreness, Lechies levered herself upright and cast her gaze down the road. Town gates loomed ahead, their shapes nearly solid black against the darkened sky. All that remained of the day was a thin strip of burnt orange between the trees. Lechies could see pins of light bobbing and weaving at their destination—guards with their lanterns.

She rubbed her thumb against her pendant. "Travelers in the dark... I hope they're not too suspicious."

"Though they've every right to be," Eun quipped.

Lechies shook her head and looked to Malcolm. "What is this place called?"
