Stray [Open]

Post by Toa »

With three arrows in his chest, a shattered leg and a bloody stump where an arm should be Toa had a distinct suspicion that the man was dead.

While she’d never come across a dead human before she did know that humans were remarkable frail, capable of dying from just waiting around for a few decades, and so with such significant injuries it seemed very likely that this one was dead. And yet not even when her closer inspection revealed that the man’s jaunty hat was in fact his top of his exposed skull was she fully convinced. Simply put she was no expert on dead humans and while any other explanation of what she was seeing would require an awful lot of evidence she just couldn’t rule it out. In these moments Toa felt the dim spark of learned wizard she had once been and she knew that she could never be sure until she gained further information.

“Hey, you dead?”

Toa waited a few moments for a response and when none came she tried to add this new piece of information into her equation. True, he would not reply if he was truly dead but it was equally true that humans were incredibly rude and he may just be ignoring her. Toa crouched down closer to get a better view of the potential corpse and drummed her fingers thoughtfully as she considered what might be a good next move. It needed to be something definitve, something that would complete her theory or sink it entirely, and after several long seconds of careful deliberation Toa poked the body with a stick.

Immediately the corpse’s remaining arm grabbed at the stick and yanked it forward, it’s eyes now alive with an unearthly green light. Had Toa been holding on the stick more tightly she might have been dragged down to the corpse but instead the broken branch was pulled from her hand without resistance. Toa took a moment to reflect on this.

“This only complicates matters.” Toa sighed, readjusting herself on the large branch she was perched upon.

The worst thing about all this was that Toa was quite certain she should know what this creature was. Admittedly that was only the worst thing if you discounted being ambushed by a horrific monster in the dead of night but as Toa had now been hiding in the tree for at least two hours she found herself with a faint sense of nostalgia for the times when things were actually happening. She wasn’t sure if she had ever been in any real danger, the creatures shattered leg allowing Toa to spend a lot of the chase walking backwards while loudly asking what it was doing, but now she was relatively confident regarding her safety. The creature had made an attempt to scale the tree to follow her but in it’s decrepit condition it only succeeded in making Toa feel ever so slightly sorry for it. Now it had decided it’s best course of action was to simply keep stare up at Toa and occasionally gurgle at her. To be fair the gurgle may have been involuntary, he did seem to be missing a sizeable section of his throat, but even so Toa had begun to find the whole thing tiresome. If she could access some of her lost memories she was sure she could identify this thing, probably even banish it or at least turn into one hundred crows, but try as she might nothing came to mind. Magic wasn’t going to help her and that meant that Toa had to come up with some other way to force this thing to leave her alone.

“Okay fine, you brought this on yourself...” Toa sighed as she once again steadied herself on the branch and locked eyes with the creature “You’re stupid.”

The creature didn’t respond

“And ugly.” Toa continued.

Once again the creature said nothing.

“Members of your social circle all agree on your various shortcomings and they only associate with you to make themselves appear better by comparison.”

At this the creature gurgled slightly and it's green eyes dimmed once again. Toa took this as a sign that she was onto something.

She was not.
