Social Interactions

Relationships and Companions

Brother Lat-nam: A monk he has a crush on from the monastery back home. He generally views Jinmenju as a distraction that keeps pulling him off the path. Jinmenju finds him cute, funny, and respectable for his dedication. They met because Jinmenju brewed some of the best spirits back at the monastery and his arts were based around drunken boxing.

Personality

He genuinely takes an interest in other people, though how good a thing that is depends on the nature of that interest. If he wants to play and you are just his toy life might become a bit hard on you, but never so hard that he breaks you. Generally though it is more positive. He is interested in physical and emotional well being and tries to see to both in those he likes and even strangers. If you are hungry he wants to feed you. If you are lonely he wants to keep you company. If you are sad he wants to be there to offer a shoulder to cry on. If you are passionate about something he wants to hear about it. It doesn't matter if its that really cool finger painting you made, the glory of your god, or some esoteric ramblings on the nature of magic. Because it is important to you it is important to him.

Because the bounty of the earth comes easily to him he is quite generous with it. Anything he can magic up only requires the effort to do so. It's not like he had to work a field all year or toil in a mine to get them nor does he have to worry about starving or going homeless. Even his crafted goods he is willing to share because it isn't the item itself that he valued, but the joy of making it. He can give as generously as only those who know they will never fear having to go wanting can. The only thing he seems to become possessive about is the things that actually take effort to cultivate, relationships. His friends, lovers, pets, enemies, etc. are his. This leads to a jealous streak which can be less than pleasant.

Similarly, he grew up surrounded by elementals who just thought that elementals were the greatest thing since the Eidolons. There is no way anyone is going to convince him that him and his friends aren't the bee's knees. The same thing goes with magic. Magic is awesome and should be respected. That being said, he does have enough good sense to read a situation and know that it might not always be the best idea to flaunt either of those things. It just burns inside him when someone tries to diminish either of them.

He gives respect to those who produce things and holds those who take from others in lower regard. Farmers and craftspeople produce what keeps the rest of the world going. The merchants, warriors, nobles, etc. all leech off of the products of the producers. They can still be good people, but generally the producers are going to be viewed as better people.

History

He was born into a tribe of elementals deep in the jungles of Ninraih that eschewed the influences of others while they tried to find a cultural identity for elementals. Given their lack of a known history like many of the other races, and their obvious connection to the Eidolons, it was important that they find out who they were as a people before they were engulfed in other cultures. Their founders had hoped to eventually develop a city that rivaled Ajteire. A place where elementals could call home and build a history as a united people.

The elders tried to honor the intentions of the founders, but as new generations were born they grew more curious of the world outside of the jungle. They got bits and pieces from old stories and people who were brought into the tribe. They would share stories of lands covered in ice, men clad in metal, great metal beasts that could pull wagons full of people, birds that floated on the wind devouring men in one place and spitting them back out at their behest. They made up entirely new stories to share with each other and many rebellious child dreamed of the day they would pick up and go to those distant lands. Nobody ever really thought that they would do it. Deep down they loved the jungle and their family. Their whole world was right there and there was no reason to leave it, but it was fun to dream.

Then the tribe ran into a monk who was wandering the jungle looking to set up a monastery far from the troubles that might arise in the cities. If a new war was going to break out in the quiet of this new age, he wanted his order to be able to continue their path unmolested. The elders wanted to kill the man, but destroying him would have fostered too much resentment in those who were curious about him. Instead they just hoped that he would go on his way, but too many of them started bringing gifts and before long he had offers from them to build the monastery and provide for the needs of him and his ilk.

The elders weren't pleased, but took some solace in the fact that the monks agreed no to get too involved with the tribe. They would stick to their studies and the tribe would attend to its own affairs. They rationalized that they could still avoid cultural contamination while allowing the younger generations a release for their curiosity about outsiders. Jinmenju grew up using his magics to grow food, textiles, and medicine for the monastery and learned brewing and distillation from them. Others learned to weave textiles or cook while other still cleaned and maintained the place or operated the baths. While most got bored with the outsiders and went back to hanging out with the tribe and sharing their skills there, some didn't.

Jinmenju was among those who continued to spend time with the monks and one monk in particular. Lat-Nam was as ignorant of elementals as the tribe was of the outside world. It was years before he realized that the tree he sat under to meditate or bitch about the struggles in his life could actually hear him and was the same boy who kept inviting him to try new recipes for spirits to see which ones he liked best and always seemed to know when he was having a rough day or would have exciting news that he would want to share. They became friends, which was a good thing to Jinmenju, but Lat-Nam considered it a worldly attachment that was an obstacle in his path to perfection.

Lat-Nam went on a pilgrimage to visit other temples and continue his training and some of the light left Jinmenju's world. The monastary wasn't the same without his friend there and the tribe just didn't understand his obsession with some outsider. Eventually he tagged along with another monk to go explore the world. Maybe he would get to see his friend again or some of the wonders he had dreamed about as a child.
