Katarya was once a pretty young woman. She could not truly be called beautiful, but her wit and intelligence more than made up for it.
Born as a Witch from a long line of prominent Witches, Katarya's lust for power and control saw her rise high and fall low. Now her face is covered in scars, one of which an old symbol she carved into her forehead herself.

Katarya is a strong willed, outspoken young woman with a curious mind. She is secretive, and reserved, having to keep her small skill in magic a secret in the confining city of Fellsguard. Folk often find her pointed tone and sarcasm to be off-putting, and people (usually men) like to say she has a block of ice where her heart should be. After her torture at the hands of Lord Gideous and his guards, Katarya's heart has darkened, and with the loss of her beloved familiar, Nyx, so has her soul.
After her mother died during childbirth, Katarya was raised by her grandmother Lilian. It was from her that she learned to use magic, studying ancient tomes in secret, hiding her skills from the other residents of Fellsguard.
When her grandmother passed away, her small shop of herbal remedies was passed to Katarya, and for a time she worked in the modest shop full time.
Katarya possesses a desired to do more than run a shop, especially as she learns more and more from the books her grandmother left behind. She does this by forging a network throughout the city, made up of anyone with information that might be of use to her, in her ever quest to influence and control the world around her.
When her shop was burned to the ground, Katarya turned, not to her friends among the respectable citizens of Fellsguard, but to the deep, underworld of the city; she carved her place among thieves and 'spooks', trying to forge her own path in the world
Soon, however, she began to crave more and more magic, and became extremely strong, but losing her compassion and ability to feel empathy with others. Her rise led to her great fall, and she was forced to try and make something of herself, though this time where coldness had been, there were now shadows.
